Our culture is deeply rooted in the traditions, stories, and wisdom passed down through generations. At Skye River Trail, we celebrate and share this heritage with all who visit, offering a unique glimpse into the rich tapestry of Mi’kmaw life.

Traditional Practices

The people known as the Mi’kmaq have a profound connection to the land and its resources, which is reflected in their traditional practices.

Activities such as basket making, canoe building, and the game of Waltes are integral parts of our culture, each with its own history and significance. These practices are not only a means of preserving our heritage but also a way of teaching younger generations about their roots and responsibilities.

Mi’kmaw Language

The Mi’kmaw language is central to the identity and culture of the Mi’kmaq people.

It is primarily oral, enriched with teachings, humor, and unique perspectives. Over time, regional dialects have emerged, reflecting the diverse experiences within Mi’kma’ki.

Despite past efforts to assimilate the Mi’kmaq, there has been a resurgence in the language’s use, with immersion programs and community efforts revitalizing this crucial aspect of their heritage.

Rituals, such as the use of sweetgrass in ceremonies and the sacred circle representing life’s cycles, play a significant role in maintaining spiritual and communal balance. Consensus-based governance and respect for all living beings underscore the interconnectedness and harmony central to Mi’kmaw life.
